Fitbit Inspire 3 vs Inspire 2 (Walking)

Last updated October 3rd, 2022

The Fitbit Inspire 3 has been released, and I thought I would take a look at some of the differences between the Fitbit Inspire 3 vs the Fitbit Inspire 2. I have owned the Fitbit Inspire 2 for just under a year now. I did do a video on some of the differences between the Fitbit Inspire 3 vs Inspire 2 leaning towards my walking activities. You can check out the video below. I'll also be leaving my opinion on some of my experiences.

Fitbit Inspire 3 vs Inspire 2 in the Sunlight

When it comes to the Fitbit Inspire 3 vs Inspire 2 in the sunlight, the winner would have to go to the Fitbit Inspire 3. But I wouldn't say it was a landslide victory. The Fitbit Inspire 3 at the default setting made the time and stats a little hard to read. Although still visible, it would have been nice if the Fitbit Inspire 3's display was a touch brighter on the default setting. The good news is, the Fitbit Inspire 3 does have a higher brightness setting. As for the Fitbit Inspire 2, I couldn't even see the display with the "dim screen," off. This was not a surprise, the Fitbit Inspire 2 has had this issue since I got it. So, for the longer walks outside, the Fitbit Inspire 3 would be my choice vs Inspire 2. The best outdoor display I have used was the Fitbit Charge 5.

The Bands - Fitbit Inspire 3 vs Inspire 2

Both bands on the Fitbit Inspire 3 and Inspire 2 are excellent. They both have that, "barely there," feel during the day. When it comes to comfort during sleep, both the Fitbit Inspire 3 and Inspire 2 sit in the, "OK," range. Both are more apparent during my sleep, and I couldn't put a winner for either. Actually, there has been no activity tracker I've worn that was awesomely comfortable during sleep. The Fitbit Inspire 3 does have a slimmer design compared to the Fitbit Inspire 2, and I found the Fitbit Inspire 3's band material felt less rubbery.

Display and Clock Faces - Fitbit Inspire 3 vs Inspire 2

The Fitbit Inspire 3 has some nice dynamic color displays compared to the Fitbit Inspire 2. I will say the Fitbit Inspire 3's clock face collection does not have the "Stats Heavy," clock face which was my favorite on the Fitbit Inspire 2. Maybe things will change in the future, who knows. The Fitbit Inspire 2 has a monochrome display with monochrome clock faces. I'm not a fan of the dynamic clock faces on the Fitbit Inspire 3 because I need to tap the screen or scroll to get to my stats such as steps. The Fitbit Inspire 3's display options are great with, always-on display and screen time-out options. These are not available on the Fitbit Inspire 2.

Steps Comparison - Fitbit Inspire 3 vs Inspire 2

I did a quick steps comparison with the Fitbit Inspire 3 vs Inspire 2 on my right wrist. I walked on my treadmill for 15 minutes and tallied up the difference in steps between the Fitbit Inspire 3 and Inspire 2.

The starting steps for the Fitbit Inspire 3 were 1,783 and the starting steps for the Fitbit Inspire 2 were 199 steps.

After 15 minutes of walking, the finishing steps on the Fitbit Inspire 3 were 2,744 and the finishing steps on the Fitbit Inspire 2 were 1,200 steps.

Fitbit Inspire 3 (Final Steps)
2,744 - 1,783 = 961 Steps

Fitbit Inspire 2 (Final Steps)
1,200 - 199 = 1,001 Steps

From my data above, it looks like the Fitbit Inspire 2 was more generous with steps compared to the Fitbit Inspire 3. Of course, there may have been small errors during the comparison. The numbers are not absolute.

In the video below, I go through the Fitbit App's dashboard (2022) on a desktop computer. I'm a fan of the desktop app, but don't really engage in it.

Quick Thoughts - Fitbit Inspire 3 and Inspire 2 (Walking)

  • I'm not completely sold on the Fitbit Inspire 3. The main reason is the absence of the "Stats Heavy," clock face which was my favorite on the Fitbit Inspire 2. The Fitbit Inspire 3 does make up for the lack of, "Stats Heavy," by having additional display settings such as being able to adjust the screen time out. The Fitbit Inspire 3 is more visible in the sunlight which is also a plus.
  • The bands are great on both the Fitbit Inspire 3 and Inspire 2. I will say, I'm also a big fan of the Fitbit Charge 5's band style. It hugs the skin much better.
  • When it comes to walking outdoors, I don't really check my stats until I get home. I think I was just used to the bad display on the Fitbit Inspire 2, so I just waited to get home and check my stats indoors. The habit did move over to the Fitbit Inspire 3. It's not the Fitbit Inspire 3's fault though, the display is much better outdoors.
  • Using the "water lock," feature on both the Fitbit Inspire 3 and Inspire 2 had the same firm rapid multi-tap style to activate. A little annoying, but not the end of the world.
  • The auto-detect for walking worked fine on both the Fitbit Inspire 3 and Inspire 2. It doesn't kick in until about 10 minutes after I start walking.
  • Moving over to the Fitbit app, I find I'm using the same non-premium features on both the Fitbit Inspire 3 and Inspire 2. I don't engage with the Discover tab, Community tab, and Premium tab. This may change in the future.
  • I'm a big fan of the "pinch," sensors on either side of the Fitbit Inspire 3 and Inspire 2. It's very easy to pinch both sides wherever I'm and bring things back to the clock face.
  • I found scrolling vertically on the Fitbit Inspire 2 was more fluid than on the Fitbit Inspire 3.
  • I never used the "active zone minutes," until I realized it was my heart rate zones. Now I use it all the time for my weight loss life and for walking.

Which Activity Tracker Do I Like Right Now? Fitbit Inspire 3, Inspire 2, or Fitbit Charge 5?

In order
  1.  Fitbit Charge 5
  2.  Fitbit Inspire 2
  3.  Fitbit Inspire 3

I would lean towards the Fitbit Charge 5 because of the vivid outdoor display, and it does have a few clock faces that have a "stats heavy," kinda look. The only issue would be it's a heavier activity tracker with wider bands, making sleep less comfortable. There are also additional features I wouldn't see myself using on the Charge 5, such as the ECG and EDA scan.
